11 Days and Counting: My Rendezvous with the Swedish Embassy and the Red Tape of Romance

Well, friends, we’re down to the final countdown—11 days until I face my interview with the Swedish embassy! I’m nervous, I’m confident, and I’m booked for Georgetown, ready to charm (or maybe just not panic) my way into a visa. My flight’s scheduled, my Airbnb is all set up, and now it’s just me, a pile of paperwork, and a steady supply of nervous energy.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the “joys” of international love stories, here’s the rundown: while most couples just go on a few dates, get hitched, and call it a day, we international couples add a fun little obstacle course known as the visa process. Picture us: two people in love, just trying to be together. Enter government protocols, embassy appointments, and the endless shuffling of official documents. It’s like the universe saw my love story and thought, “Let’s add some plot twists!”

But seriously—how is it that some people meet, get married, and are together every day without a second thought, while others of us need enough paperwork to fill a small library? I can’t decide if I’m envious or just bitter. (Both, probably both.)

On the bright side, I’m ready to bring my A-game to the embassy. I’ve practiced my best “I promise I’m not a spy” smile, rehearsed my answers, and packed all the required documents (twice). I feel like I’m about to take the most important test of my life, with the prize being—drumroll, please—a chance to actually live with my husband. Who knew love would require this much red tape?

So here we go—11 days to go, a few more sleepless nights, and hopefully soon, a visa in hand. Fingers crossed that Sweden is ready for us because I’m ready to embrace my inner Swede and finally say goodbye to my long-distance relationship.
