Not All Who Wander Are Lost

Not Just a Festival- It’s Full-On Time Travel

Okay, let’s be real: there are “medieval festivals,” and then there’s Medieval Week in Visby. This isn’t some half-hearted Ren Faire with plastic swords and turkey legs. This is a fully immersive, thousand-year rewind where the entire town commits like, costume-and-character, speak-in-runes level of commitment.

Every August, thousands of visitors flood the streets of Visby dressed head to toe in medieval garb. We’re talking knights in full armor, peasants haggling in makeshift markets, wandering minstrels, and yes, probably a few plague doctors for good measure. And the wild part? It’s not even weird there. It’s expected.

The whole town becomes a stage, and everyone’s in on the act. Historical lectures, candlelit concerts in church ruins, mock battles, archery tournaments, blacksmith demos, even medieval-style taverns serving mead and stew. You don’t attend Medieval Week. You inhabit it.

Why I’m so excited:

This is exactly the kind of strange and wonderful event that makes me love travel. It’s not just about seeing a place; it’s about stepping into a different rhythm, a different reality. And I cannot wait to be in Visby this August, walking through the old gates and straight into the 14th century (preferably with a linen cloak and some decent boots).

Modern life can wait. I’m going to be busy watching a siege, drinking from a clay mug, and living out every history nerd’s dream- surrounded by roses, ruins, and more chainmail than should legally be allowed in one place.
