Monkeys, Murals, and Medieval Walls: Rethinking Graffiti in Visby

From wisecracks to street art, the writing on the wall means something different now.

Visby, a city where ancient stone walls whisper tales of Vikings and medieval merchants, also hums with the vibrant pulse of contemporary creativity. Amidst its cobblestone streets and historic ruins, modern street art emerges, adding splashes of color and commentary to the city’s storied backdrop.

One such example is the dynamic graffiti found throughout the city, showcasing local artists’ talents and perspectives. These artworks, often tucked away in alleys or adorning less-traveled walls, invite passersby to pause and reflect on the dialogue between past and present.

The juxtaposition is striking: vivid murals set against the timeworn stones of Visby’s medieval structures. It’s as if the city itself is a canvas, layering centuries of human expression, from solemn ecclesiastical architecture to the playful irreverence of street art.

🇸🇪 Swedish Word of the Day: “Gatukonst”

Pronunciation: GAH-too-kohnst

Meaning: Street art

Used in a sentence:

“Jag blev förvånad över all gatukonst i Visby- det är som om Banksy fick en tidsmaskin och landade mitt i 1300-talet!”

“I was surprised by all the street art in Visby- it’s like Banksy got a time machine and crash-landed in the 1300s!”

As I anticipate my first visit to Visby, the thought of wandering through its historic streets, discovering bursts of contemporary art nestled among ancient ruins, fills me with excitement. It’s a testament to the city’s living history- a place where every stone and stroke tells a story.

My Gran used to say, “Fools’ names and monkeys’ faces are always seen in public spaces.” She meant it as a caution against graffiti and egos scrawled across walls. But standing in Visby- surrounded by centuries of stone and bursts of modern color- I think she might’ve agreed that times have changed.

This isn’t just scribbles. It’s conversation. It’s history catching up with itself. And in a city built on layers, maybe a splash of unexpected color is just another way we remind the world: we were here too.
