Not All Who Wander Are Lost

Wi-Fi and Waffles in a Walled City

I keep trying to picture Visby in real time — not Medieval Week, not a postcard — but an actual Wednesday morning in June. And honestly? It sounds like the kind of place where you could trip over a rune stone while searching for oat milk.

This town has layers. On one hand, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site with rose-covered ruins, crumbling church towers, and cobblestones straight out of a time machine. On the other hand, it’s full of students, artists, shopkeepers, and locals just trying to find decent parking. It looks like you can literally sit in a 13th-century building, scrolling TikTok while drinking a flat white.

And apparently, waffles are a thing on Gotland. Not just any waffles — Swedish-style, heart-shaped, served with cloudberry jam and whipped cream levels of waffle. I plan to find the best one in Visby and build an emotional attachment.

So tell me:

👉 Where’s your favorite waffle spot in Visby?

Is it a hidden garden café? A beachside kiosk? A medieval cellar with powdered sugar and mood lighting? I’m all ears and empty plate.

Swedish Word of the Day: Våffla (noun) – waffle 🧇

(En våffla om dagen håller medeltiden i magen. – A waffle a day keeps the Middle Ages in your belly.)
