Not All Who Wander Are Lost

Trying to Plan (but Not Overplan) My Gotland Wandering

I don’t want to over-schedule myself.

I really don’t.

But also… it’s GOTLAND.

And I know I’ll regret it if I don’t get out and explore the rest of the island beyond the medieval dreamscape that is Visby.

So now I’m deep into the rabbit hole of:

  • 🚶‍♀️ Walking tours
  • 🚌 Bus tours
  • 🐎 Historical rides
  • 📜 Possibly a haunted church crawl (yes please)

Because this island is packed with ancient churches, fossil beds, stone ship burials, windswept coastlines, Viking farms, and fairy tales etched into every mossy boulder.

🧭 Some places I want to see:

  • Fårö (if I can get up there)—windswept and quiet, home to Ingmar Bergman and other ghosts
  • Gannarve – one of the most famous stone ship settings
  • Lojsta – Viking-era homes, forests, and folklore trails
  • Fröjel – where one of “my” ancient DNA matches was found (!!)
  • The limestone sea stacks (raukar) that look like nature’s Stonehenge

The problem? I want to see all of it.

The reality? I don’t drive. So I’m cobbling together tours and public transit like a slightly confused time traveler.

If anyone has advice, feel free to shout into the void (or my DMs).

Swedish Word of the Day: “utflykt”

Utflykt – excursion, day trip

Used in a sentence:

Jag försöker boka en utflykt till Gotlands vildare delar.

(I’m trying to book an excursion to Gotland’s wilder parts.)
