Some places are destinations.
Others are part of the adventure.
As I continue planning our trip to Kalmar and Öland, I’ve realized that I’m just as excited about the journey as I am about the places we’ll visit. Of course, I’m looking forward to exploring ancient ring forts, castle ruins, museums, and archaeological sites, but I’m also looking forward to the quieter moments that often become the most memorable.
Driving across the Öland Bridge and spending time along Kalmar’s harbor are two experiences I can’t stop thinking about.
The Journey Across the Öland Bridge
I’ve seen photographs of the Öland Bridge countless times, but I know seeing it in person will be something entirely different.
Stretching for more than six kilometers (about four miles), it’s Sweden’s longest bridge and the only road connecting the mainland to the island of Öland. Every trip across it feels like the beginning of an adventure.
As the mainland slowly disappears behind us and Öland comes into view, I’ll finally be crossing into a place I’ve spent months researching.
Sandby borg.
Ismantorp.
The Great Alvar.
Places that have lived in my imagination for so long will suddenly be just a short drive away.
I have a feeling the bridge itself will be one of those moments I’ll always remember.
Not because it’s simply a bridge.
Because of everything waiting on the other side.
Kalmar’s Harbor
Before we cross the bridge, I hope to spend some time along Kalmar’s beautiful harbor.
I’ve always been drawn to waterfronts.
There’s something peaceful about watching boats come and go while the water reflects the changing sky.
Kalmar’s harbor seems like the perfect place to slow down for a while.
I can already picture myself walking along the promenade with my camera in hand, stopping every few minutes because I’ve found another beautiful view.
Colorful buildings.
Historic ships.
The sound of seagulls overhead.
The gentle movement of sailboats in the marina.
Those aren’t dramatic attractions, but they’re the kinds of moments that stay with me long after a trip is over.
Looking Back Toward the Castle
One of the things I’m especially excited about is seeing Kalmar Castle from the waterfront.
Some of the most beautiful photographs I’ve seen weren’t taken inside the castle at all.
They were taken from across the water, where the castle rises dramatically above the shoreline.
After learning so much about its history and legends, I can’t wait to stand there and see it with my own eyes.
I have a feeling I’ll spend more time taking photographs than I planned.
Sometimes the Journey Is the Destination
Travel isn’t always about racing from one famous attraction to the next.
Sometimes it’s about slowing down.
Watching the boats.
Feeling the sea breeze.
Crossing a bridge you’ve dreamed about for months.
Taking a deep breath and realizing you’re finally there.
Those quiet moments often become the ones we remember most.
That’s why I’m just as excited about the drive across the Öland Bridge and a walk along Kalmar’s harbor as I am about the castles, museums, and archaeological sites waiting beyond them.
Sometimes the journey itself becomes part of the destination.
And I have a feeling that’s exactly what these two places will be for me.
